Most of them work the same way: a wrapper around the ChatGPT API, with some access to your product catalog, pointed at your customers. The setup takes an afternoon. The problems that can follow take longer to untangle. ## How These Plugins Actually Work The typical WooCommerce AI chatbot plugin pulls product data - titles, descriptions, prices, categories - and injects it into a system prompt or retrieval context. When a customer asks a question, the plugin sends that question to the API along with whatever product context it has assembled, and returns the model’s response. The issue is that this pipeline has no validation layer on the output side. The model generates text. The plugin returns that text to the customer. Nothing in between checks whether the text is accurate. ## The Three Failure Modes Wrong prices. Product pricing in WooCommerce is more complex than it looks - sale prices, tiered pricing, customer group discounts, currency conversion, dynamic pricing rules. The chatbot’s context is a snapshot of whatever the plugin fetched at configuration time or at query time, and that snapshot may not reflect current pricing. A customer asks what a product costs, the bot gives a number, the checkout shows a different one. At best, this erodes trust. At worst, the customer has a screenshot. Wrong return policies. Return policies change. Plugin configurations don’t always update with them. If your chatbot is answering policy questions from a cached version of your terms, it may be confidently explaining a policy you no longer have. Under the EU Consumer Rights Directive, the information provided to consumers during the sales process - including via automated systems - can be binding. “The chatbot said so” is not a defense that reliably works. Hallucinations about product specs. This is the one that surprises clients most. Language models generate plausible-sounding text. When they don’t have accurate information about a product, they don’t say “I don’t know” - they fill the gap with something that sounds right. Product dimensions, compatibility information, material composition, technical specifications: all of these are categories where a hallucinated answer looks confident and wrong. The framing there is technical, but the practical problem is the same: unvalidated model output reaching end users who have no way to distinguish it from authoritative information. ## What I Check During an Audit When I see an AI chatbot plugin installed on a WooCommerce store, I check for four things: Real-time data access. Is the bot working from live pricing and inventory, or from a cached snapshot? If it’s a snapshot, how old is it and what triggers an update? Response logging. Are chatbot conversations stored anywhere? If a customer later disputes something the bot told them, is there a record of what was actually said? Most plugins don’t log by default. Visible disclaimer. Is there anything on the interface that tells users they’re talking to an AI, and that they should verify important information? Some jurisdictions are beginning to require this disclosure explicitly. System prompt guardrails. What instructions has the system prompt given the model about its own limitations? A bot with no instructions will try to answer everything. A bot with good instructions will redirect pricing and policy questions to authoritative sources - the actual product page, the actual terms document. ## The Practical Risk The legal and reputational risk here is concentrated at the customer-facing interaction point. An AI plugin that gives wrong technical specs might result in a return and a refund. An AI plugin that states a binding price that checkout then contradicts, or that explains a return policy that customer service then overrides, is creating a paper trail that works against you. Most store owners haven’t thought through any of this because the plugin was easy to install and appeared to work. The chatbot answers questions. Customers seem to find it helpful.
